Chitsungo mission hospital history

The mission was opened on 21-06-1953 by Fr Kotzik, Br Ephraim and Fr Pirog in Chapoto area. Due to lack of water it was moved to the present place in in 1963. Fr. Joackim Von Kerssenbrock joined the community on 29-05-1964 and took over as Fr. Kotzik’s health was deteriorating. They worked tirelessly on the construction of the hospital and the work was completed in 1965. On 18-11-1969 the hospital was blessed.

In 1978 most of the buildings were destroyed by the war. The buildings were later refurbished in 1983 when the war was over. In 1993 the current hospital buildings were erected.

Chitsungo hospital is a general hospital which offers rehabilitation, laboratory, FCH,OI, outpatient, maternity and theatre mainly for CS and small surgeries.

Chitsungo has a capacity of 65 beds and a total population of 86250

We have some little equipment that includes microscope, FBC machine, covid PCR, and biosafety cabinet as well as a CD4 count machine, Aenestatic machine. The hospital would need more equipment to enable up to date treatment and care of patients.
