Background Summary
In 1958 the “Daughters of Our Lady of the Sacred Heart” (OLSH) from Messina took over the hospital and Fr. Om came as chaplain to Mangula in September 1958. On 20.07.61 Fr. Friedrich replaced him. The chaplaincy soon developed into a parish. A plot was acquired and a church was built in 1963. On 18.09 1974 the priest’s house and a hall were started. Fr. Wermter was helped by the Archdiocese of Cologne.
He moved into his new parish center on 13.02.75; it was blessed on 15.6.1975. In 1977 there were 14 outstations: several new ones, others closed because of shifting population. During Fr. Wermter’s tertianship, Fr. Thiel supplied from June 1977 to January 1978. In 1978, the church plot was extended and a new wing for the parish center was built kitchen, assembly room, office for the catechist, etc.
It was blessed on 8.10.1978 by Mgr Reckter. In November 1978 the church extension started. In 1983 the church in Doma was blessed. At the end of 1994, the parish was handed over to the diocesan clergy.
