MARYMOUNT MISSION HOSPITAL

History

Marymount Mission Hospital is a Catholic Mission institution in the Diocese of Chinhoyi. It dates back to 1948 when it was a small dispensary and morphed into a hospital in 1956 with 35 beds thereafter in the 1990’s the bed capacity rose to 120 beds. It has a staff establishment of 84 members. In 1979 some of the hospital staff (religious) were abducted into Mozambique, and the hospital remained closed till 1980. In 1986 up to the late nineties it was the acting District Hospital for Rushinga.

Geographical Position.

The hospital is 291 Km North East of Harare, in Rushinga District, Mashonaland Central Province, and 391 km away from Chinhoyi where it is administered from. We serve as the first referral point for patients from six clinics that is Bopoma, Mukosa, Chimandau, Nyatsato, Mukonde, and Mazowe Bridge.  Furthermore, we serve patients from other provinces like Mashonaland East, especially from Uzumba Maramba Pfungwe area, and clients from the Mozambique borderline. The hospital falls in climatic region five which is hot and below average rains. The community is a peasant community surviving mostly on subsistence farming with low purchasing power and sometimes would offer to pay in kind. We are 40km from the District Hospital and linked by a poor road network of dust roads. We refer most patients to Karanda Mission Hospital and Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals. The hospital is electrified, uses piped borehole water, and has solar power as backup in some departments.
