Background Summary
After the complete destruction of the parish house in St Edward’s during the Liberation War, Fr. Hipler chose a new site in the Sipolilo growth point. The new mission of over 3 acres was started in 1980 and was dedicated to St. Joseph. After a pre- fabricated house was erected, he moved to Sipolilo in October 1980. Also in October the same year, the cook could move into his new house. In April 1982 the community house was finished; and a hall was built in the same year. On 7.8.1983 Christ the King Church in Mudindo was blessed by Mgr Reckter. It replaced the church in Chigangaidze which was demolished during the war. Also St. Michael’s Church in Tahwa was finally blessed on 11.12.1983. In 1986 the St Joseph’s Church on the mission was started.
It was blessed on 30.10.1988. Before the church was roofed, Fr. Ignatius Zvarevashe took over as parish priest. The parish was handed over to a diocesan priest, Fr. Kizito Mangava in 2002.
During 1986 Fr. Hipler introduced Small Christian Communities (with Gospel sharing) in his parish. He had started over 22 such SCC in half of his parish when he was transferred. In April 1987 Fr. Hirmer gave a Lumko course for all priests of the diocese in Kutama.
Parish priests: Fr. Hipler 1969-86, Fr. Zvarevashe 1987-91, Fr. Abeler 1992-95, Fr. Fuhge SJ 1996-2001, Fr. Kizito Mangava 2002-July 05: Mubaya July 2005.
After the opening of these six new missions, a time of consolidation followed. In 1971 the government made it impossible for the churches to continue with outschools. It asked them to pay 5% of all the teachers’ salaries to begin with. Therefore, instead of the schools, many new mass-centres were opened. The catechists took the place of teachers.
