Background Summary

St. Rupert Mayer Mission was founded on the 16th of July in 1964 by Fr. Rudolph Kensy S.J. (1909-
1981). It has two martyrs, Br. Bernard Lisson S.J. (born 1909) and Fr. Gregor Richert S.J. (born 1930),
who were killed on 27 June 1978 during the Zimbabwe Liberation struggle. The mission is located in
Makonde (Chigaro area). Makonde is a very poor place, physically unfriendly and remote (about
95km from Chinhoyi town and 208km from Harare—the capital city in extremely bad roads)
inhabited by people who look forward to the mission to be their light bearer.
The Mission is named after a German Jesuit Priest (23 January 1876 – 1 November 1945). Rupert
Mayer was a strong critic of the Nazi regime. From him, just as from our Mission martyrs, we get the
inspiration to be confident in the Lord. St. Rupert Mayer Mission runs two schools, a hospital and a
parish. The parish runs 20 outstations with the furthest in the excess of 100km
